It would be pleasant to think that all who choose to be magic users are of the "chaotic-good freedomist" alignment, intentions directed by a spirit of unconditional love. Most of the so-called New Age or Aquarian Age literature certainly takes that viewpoint. However it is a fact that people of all the different moral alignments do exist, and their potential for using any magic technique is the same. It is not the nature of the tool that determines whether its use is good or evil, but the intention of the user. It is wise to remember, however, that spiritual laws work the same for Magicians of all alignments. The law of the circle is the most fundamental and powerful in the creation, and is expressed by such sayings as, "What goes around comes around," and, "You reap what you sow." This truth makes the curse a particularly dangerous technique to employ. Curses are reflexive, and like a scorpion stinging itself to death, the Magician can find their use self-defeating. If you curse someone for something, and then ever do or become that which you have cursed, your curse is upon you, and you will destroy yourself with your own power. Remember that you judge yourself always in your own court, and none is more tightly bound than she who binds herself. Your only freedom is to forgive the one whom you have cursed.



It is a common misconception among the uninitiated that they should use black candles for whatever they perceive to be evil ends. It is probably fortunate that black is actually among the very weakest colors they could choose to evoke evil future consequences. Black is for releasing life into the past, for freeing the present of the consequences of past acts. It is the color of forgiveness, of apology, and release. Each of the colors has magical associations which could be used for evil intention. Red is a good anger color, which makes it useful to focus hatred or revenge. Greens have long been used to denote envy, and may be used to arouse self-destructive envy and greed in the weak-minded. Deep blue and purple evoke depression, and can be used to create an emotional burden. The mixing of opposite colors, like red and green, produces a muddied effect which can create a feeling of confusion, even of neurosis, which is a sense of conflicting intentions.



Such qualities as morality and intention are difficult to define, since we each tend to evaluate them in the light of our own. Here's that essay on the Burning Times that you asked me for. -Lark-

One of the lasting popular myths in Wicca is that of the so-called "Burning Times" when allegedly 9 million women died for refusing to give up their Pagan beliefs and convert to Catholocism. We are given the story of women in their hundreds walking into the sea to drown rather than be burned. We are sometimes even told about the Pagan women who were burned at Salem, MA. Sadly this myth seems to be a hard one to make go away even when all the evidence clearly shows that it is incorrect.

In the first place no 9 million women died. There probably weren't even that many women in Europe during the time period in question. Nor did 9 million men, women and children die. Research has shown that the number is probably in the range of 40,000-60,000 during the period from 1200 CE to the Salem trials in the early 1600. Nor is there any credible evidence that any large groups of women walked into the sea to escape death at the hands of the Inquisition.

Secondly, the people who died were mostly Christian heretics. In fact if one reads through the records of the Inquisition in Spain one can find accounts where people who claimed to have been practicing Witchcraft were released as being deluded fools but not the heretics that the Church was looking for. By the time of the "Burning Times" most of Europe was well and thoroughly Christianized. And in Iceland which continued to have an active Pagan population the charge of being Pagan was not thought of as a burning offense.

Nor was it a war against the women. The idea that it was the Church warring on the women of Europe is a modern one which first appeared during the feminist writings in the 1970's and is not supported by fact. In Germany deaths were about equal as to sex, and in Iceland more men than women were killed.

Remember that the Witches that people hated and feared during the "Burning Times" are not Witches as we think of them today. Nor were they Pagans. People feared witchcraft because it was thought that those who practiced it could cause death and disease of people livestock and crops. For people who didn't have the scientific background we have today it was easy to blame witchraft for the unexplained. Think of the Black Death that killed nearly 1/3 of the population of Europe. If you didn't understand the idea of germs and disease transmission a frightened person would easily ascribe it to witchcraft. And if no way to stop the disease were known other than killing the witch before s/he killed you and your village think how easy it would be to do what you had to do in your fear to survive.

Some other facts to consider. No one was burned at Salem, MA. All but one were hanged and the last was crushed under rocks. In England those convicted were hanged. Certainly there were burnings in Scotland, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. But again these were far fewer than the myth would have us believe and were not Pagans dying for their faith.

The problem with the continuing myth of the "Burning Times" is that it locks us into an Us vs Them mentality which does little except encourage hate and fear that has as little actual basis in fact as did the fear of witchcraft in those times. We are creating a climate of fear based on the same sort of witchhunt that started the whole process of killing people back then. Only this time it is WE who are the witch hunters and our non-Pagan neighbors who are the witches.

Here are some recommended websites and books on the topic of the "Burning Times" that you will find, I believe, completely debunk the whole idea of the "Burning Times" as it is put forth in some Pagan books who seek to create a myth that binds us together as the perescuted outsiders. I encourage you to do some serious reading and thinking and ask yourself whether you want to retain a myth in our religion that does nothing except encourage the hate of others. Last time I checked that was not what Wicca is all about.

Resplendent tendrils of the everlasting soul entwine and mesh with the aura of another, morphing and creating the dance of souls uniting into one. The effervescent flow between each of the auras transcend all rhythms and comprehensions. Latching onto to one another with a perpetual bond of love, the strands of energy lock lovingly forever, blending and bonding to create a harmonious symbiosis of bliss.

Every individual, entity and item on this plane of existence carries with them a permanent imprint of energy. Surrounding their delicate and fragile molecular cohesion, a dense and permanent glow of existence resides. Affected by various energy environments, this rainbow of potential colors forms the illuminating and energetic shield known as your aura.

Whether falling in love or attaching one’s interest to a cherished item, the aura reaches it’s ethereal grasp to mesh flawlessly with the chosen suitor. As time goes on, the essence of both bodies become stronger and more cemented together. Entangling their auras with love, therefore creating an invisible nexus and fusion.

Envision the auras as clouds merging with one another in the sky, the seams dissipate and the two become one. Though the original clouds still exist, they have flawlessly integrated their fluidity. Human auras react in the same fashion. Our soulful emanation melds with other souls to create a unification called love.

Humans can also attach their aura to places and items, but the intensity relayed from the place or item is far less dramatic than that of a living being. Reciprocation of this energy is essential for a permanent and tremendously satisfying bond.

Infatuation or obsession can occur when someone who desires the blending does not receive the reciprocation of the feelings of love and is denied in the attempt. This denial can result in the lacking individual to develop possessive behavior. The pursuer is that of an energy vampire, attempting to drain the essence by force or manipulation. The less the victim gives, the more energy the obsessive person desires to obtain. Usually due to many factors such as a traumatic, affection neglected childhood or mental disorder, the obsessive personality craves the attention and rewards of merging auras with another. When denied, the pursuer can become violent, irrational and more determined, potentially turning them into stalkers.

The best way to deal with these individuals is to ignore and continue to deny them any energy, positive or negative. Eventually their subconscious realizes that they are getting nowhere and will look elsewhere.

Some individuals with dysfunctional or depleted auras with behave with derogatory and demeaning natures towards others. These people feel the need to steal others’ positive ambiance to increase the power of their own. By constantly belittling and bullying others, they infiltrate the energy of their targets, temporarily and artificially restoring their own. Toxic individuals, such as complainers and people with negative attitudes, fall under the same category.

This unnatural act of energy thievery causes a continuous roller coaster of opposing energies for the aura pirate. They must learn to repair their own aura from within, not by stealing from innocent bystanders for their temporary fix. Simply avoiding these individuals and recognizing their attempts nullifies the embezzlement.

A constant healthy and vibrant aura is obtained by those who remain in balance with mind, body and soul. Pure and healthy auras tend to surround individuals who practice meditation, yoga and various self rewarding activities. Usually they are those who eat healthy and mind their body. Creating a balance within and without is the key to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Maintaining awareness and mindfulness of the energy field can keep the aura in perfect condition, warding off physical and mental illnesses as well as the bombardment of negative energies.

When healthy auras merge, the result is that of ethereal bliss. Finding mutual love and acceptance is one of the most rewarding and glorious occasions for your soul to experience. The constant loving ache for one another is but a glimpse into the gates of heaven itself. The joys and blissful conditions that the bonds create can last until eternity. Beyond the tedious, but necessary, paperwork and formalities, the selected newbie should be extensively trained in the safety, technology and protocol requirements. Establish basic parameters and guidelines for basic ghost hunting procedures. Mental and emotional stability should be factored into an initial interview, someone who has a history of paranoid schizophrenia or anxiety attacks may want to rethink their paranormal investigative intentions.



Taping down equipment wiring throughout the house and performing an extensive tour of the home's geography are both essential safety factors.



Be sure to inform your newest detective in the basic knowledge of your chosen equipment. It would be a shame to have been in the midst of a visual paranormal breakthrough and have had the camera's lens cap on. Run through the usage, storage and maintenance of your equipment.



Establish an organized guideline of your investigative procedures. It's embarrassing and time consuming to simply wander into a home and not know what to do next. Have specific goals and efficient plans for your ghost hunt, proficiency may be the key to your success.



Additional insurance in case of accidental damage by you or your team should definitely be considered as well as coverage for team members in case of injury.



Dishing out cash for vast quantities of batteries is a simple reality you must face, it may be prudent to suggest that there be a monthly contribution from all members to compensate for these and other necessary costs. Wholesale stores may sell batteries in bulk for less.



Other considerations while stealthily hunting the elusive entity in closed quarters would be noise control of the team. It may be wise to suggest team mates wear slippers rather than shoes that click or squeak, causing unnecessary noise pollution. Any accessories, such as jewelry, should be removed if they have a tendency to produce a jingle. Check clothing before progressing through the home for audible friction, some fabrics when rubbed together can cause quite the disruption, so no eighties windbreakers, sexy leather pants or funky corduroy please. Stay in the investigative fashion with good old breathable and quiet cotton.



Outside attire should be considered if scouting the grounds will be necessary. Warm jackets and gloves will hopefully prevent any teeth chattering that can override catching any the all important EVP (electronic voice phenomena).



Brimmed hats should go due to the visual impediment they may cause. One's line of sight is considerably reduced by the need to hide one's bad hair day. Often times, there are reflective buttons and clasps as well that may cause confusion when light is reflected, allowing members to inadvertently assume an orb was captured. Keep this in mind as well with clothing choice, the less reflective items visually, the better.



An important point to consider, make sure all of your team members have had sufficient food, water and rest. Low blood sugar, dehydration or excessive fatigue can lead to the discouraging failure of a ghost hunt. The last thing you need is someone fainting from hunger or having mild hallucinations from exhaustion when trying to prove yourself professional paranormal scientists. It goes without saying that any member that arrives at the location intoxicated or under the influence of drugs should be escorted home.



Possibly have the homeowner convey discretely to the neighbors that there will be strangers parading in the dark with flashlights in their home at an odd hour would be a definite consideration, unless you would like a minor visitation from the boys in blue.



Politely asking your client to find a babysitter for their pets while you are conducting an investigation would be wise. The less disruption in the home, the better. You wouldn't want Casper the friendly feline being responsible for ominous shadow in the basement nor would you want him jumping out of a closet and causing near heart failure for your poor team members.



All in all, your ghost hunt should contain elements of intelligent investigative skills, respectful scientific approach and an open mind willing to spelunk the mysterious caves of the paranormal.

Delicate ethereal whispers dance effortlessly upon the waves of the paranormal ocean. Patterns of energy in the form of thoughts impress themselves upon the soul of the empathic medium. A psychic echo reverberates with varying intensity within the all seeing eye of the crown chakra.



When desiring to enhance one's psychic ability, it is essential to comprehend the universal laws of the mystic phenomena. First and foremost, the law of permission. You may not read someone until they have explicitly given you permission, both verbally and energetically. Verbally, they must ask you personally to perform a reading for them, but energetically, they must offer their energy to you. This can be done is many, many different fashions. With palm reading, they open both of their hands to you, allowing their subconscious to lower the powerful conscious walls of the mind which restricts the energy flow.



Basic understanding of the art of palmistry is obviously helpful, but once the psychic mind tunes into the energy, the lines on the hands are no longer necessary. Reading the palm is merely opening the door to receiving the information embedded in the energy of the individual.



All forms of psychic readings must first begin with the full acceptance and permission of the client or the energy will not be read easily or effectively. Attempting to read an individual's photograph without specific authorization can lead to an ineffective or inaccurate reading. There must be a mutual compliance between the parties.

This is also the process by which to contact spirits on the other side, sending an invisible invitation through thought enables the entity desired to interpret your intentions and reciprocate.

When energy is given, energy can then be shared and then ultimately, you can literally 'feel' and 'know' the energy of the other person. The images, thoughts and essence of a person cannot be taken, it must be politely asked for, then gratefully accepted.



Subtle and often powerful sensations can be felt throughout the reading, the most important being the rush of tingling sensation on a portion or all of your body. Unsolicited thoughts are the essential core of the reading. These random and seemingly odd thoughts and images are the items that you are to portray to the client. Translate them as honestly, plainly and explicitly as you can.



Deciphering the codes of each individual's personal energy takes practice and patience. Allowing the feelings, thoughts and impressions to flow freely through you is the only effective way to interpret efficiently. Remembering that you, the psychic, is not the source of the external energy nor are you the receptor, you are the translator. Energy works in a circular formation, originating from the source, the client, merging with your own and then through the verbal interpretation is reciprocated back again to the client. Understanding this crucial point is the key to a successful and highly effective reading that can enable your client to feel they've been guided honestly and competently on their spiritual path.



Some wannabe psychics mistakenly believe that they themselves are the source of a mystical energy that produces personal information and that some magical event is transpiring that enables them to dredge up the past, present and future. In truth, this misguided attempt to force impressions to come forward can result in inaccuracy and imaginative revelations.



When performing the reading, you must relinquish any ego or sense of self, this reading is not for you or for your own personal gratification, it must be done without any selfish purpose. The only person who should benefit from a reading is the client.



At this stage, all of your attention must be focused completely on trust. Trust that the source, the provider and process of the energy is in control, not you. The psychic cannot manipulate, contain or own the energy, it is but a means to serve the client with their divine right of spiritual knowledge and purpose. With the privilege of performing a psychic reading comes the responsibility of privacy, respect and surrender of your basic human tendencies towards self affirmation and pride. If you have performed your divine psychic duty properly, you will retain very little memory of the client's personal messages, the flow of energy will have transpired through you, not into you.



Trusting the information is difficult at first until you realize that with each statement that you present to the client, that is of pure intention, is being confirmed accordingly. Just because an image, thought or idea seems ridiculous or odd doesn't mean that it is not intended for the client. Trust that the sources guiding this session, the spirit guides, know their purpose and have everything under control. If they wish to convey an important detail to the client, your job is to simply believe in the spirit guides and state the message, no opinion or judgment must be passed on any messages.



Once the reading has established a positive and strong energy connection between you and the client via confirmation of personal information provided by the spirit guides, questions from the client can be asked. When the question is asked by the client, there should be very little time elapsed when receiving the psychic answer. The first and loudest answer is the right one. Trust your guide, repeat this word often to yourself and to your guide, trust, trust, trust. If you cannot receive an answer immediately and clearly, either move on to a different question or be honest and tell them that you simply aren’t getting that answer. They may not be allowed to know that particular answer regarding their spiritual journey at that time.



After the questions are completed, end the session by ascertaining if the client feels at ease with the reading, if they felt that it assisted them in the spiritual aspects they were searching for. Make sure to inform them that readings are not necessary too often as they themselves also have to learn to trust their spirit guides and teach themselves to listen to their intuition. Psychics are meant to teach and guide spirituality, not to become a crutch or dependency.



Payment for services depends on the psychic. Personally, I don’t accept any monetary payment. I believe in spiritual service and teaching mankind to awaken their own spiritual devices. I simply ask that they return the favor of my time and effort with a heartfelt good deed done for someone else.

Many psychics accept payment, which is completely their prerogative, but in stating that, excessive requests of money, the demand of immediate purchase of various mystical items and the implication of several visits to the psychic implies that a client should not return and find a more suitable spiritual servant.



Remember this, we are first and foremost spiritual beings having a human experience, we were born with every mystical tool and divine device that we would ever need throughout our whole life on earth. Awakening from the illusion of harsh reality, you will realize that the only thing you need to receive the psychic echo is to give the gift of awareness to another.

What are flower essences? Think of the beauty and delicacy of a flower, the purity and radiance of a single violet in springtime. Imagine if we could capture the essence, the pure vibrational quality of that flower, and take that exquisite frequency within our being to heal the weariness in our soul or the sorrow in our heart. This is the art and science of creating flower essences.



As with homeopathic remedies, flower essences work by their unique vibrational signatures, not by the actual substance that is ingested. Homeopathic remedies tend to work closer to the physical body, whereas flower essences have their greatest effect on the mind, emotions, and spirit. Flower essences act at a subtle level to restore harmony and infuse positive energy into the subtle energy matrix which forms the foundation of our physical life. They are traditionally made by placing flowers in a bowl of water and then leaving the bowl in the sunlight for 4 to 5 hours. The effect of the sunlight is to transfer the energetic imprint, or vibrational frequency, of the flowers into the water. Each flower has its own very specific frequency, and water is a medium which can hold that kind of energetic imprint. Once the water has been fully imprinted, it is then decanted into bottles and preserved, usually with brandy.





Flower essences were brought to the attention of the western world by Dr. Edward Bach in England. In 1930, Bach was inspired by a nature walk through the dew-laden fields of Wales where many wild flowers grew. Shortly thereafter, he began to experiment with his flower essences and then to treat patients. Bach created a set of 38 remedies which were divided into seven groups, each representing basic conflicts that prevent us from being whole: fear, uncertainty, insufficient interest in present circumstances, loneliness, over-sensitivity to influences and ideas, despondency or despair, and over-care for the welfare of others.





Because of the success of Dr. Bach’s original remedies, and because of increasing interest in non-invasive, energy-based healing modalities, recent decades have seen a great proliferation in flower essences. Large companies, such as the Flower Essence Society, have been formed and offer thousands of individual remedies.





The work of another great genius, the Japanese researcher Dr. Masaru Emoto, has brought flower essences to an entirely new level. Dr. Emoto began to study the crystalline properties of water. He photographed water molecules from a polluted lake, which were ugly and misshapen. Dr. Emoto then gathered a group of people on the shore of the lake. The group prayed, sending love and positive energy into the water. When Dr. Emoto photographed the water molecules again, they had been transformed into a beautiful, crystalline shape.





Dr. Emoto proceeded to conduct further experiments with water. He found that taping a written word onto the bottle would change its crystalline structure. Words such as “Hitler” would cause deformed shapes, whereas “Love” or “Gratitude” created perfect, symmetrical water crystals. In repeated experiments, Dr. Emoto demonstrated conclusively that thought and intention influenced water. When asked about the difference between the focused intention of one person v.s. a group, he replied:



“Since the water reflects the composite energy of what is being sent to it, the crystalline structure reflects the composite vibrations of the group. So one person praying reflects the energy or intention of that one person. In terms of how powerful the effect can be, if you have one person praying with a deep sense of clarity and purity, the crystalline structure will be clear and pure. And even though you may have a large group of people, if their intention as a group is not cohesive, you end up with an incohesive structure in the water. However, if everyone is united together, you will find a clear, beautiful crystal, like one created by the prayer of a single person of deep purity.”





Based on the traditions brought to our world by Dr. Bach, and furthered by the knowledge that thought, prayer, and intention can affect water, a whole new generation of flower essences is being born. A person who has mastered the ability to focus and channel pure energies can overlight a flower essence as it is being made, adding layers of depth, power, and resonance into the resulting essence. It is also possible to call on higher dimensional beings, such as Archangel Michael for example, to directly potentize the water. These new remedies often have a faster, deeper, and more noticeable effect than the traditional remedies. In a sense, they combine the simple devic energies of the nature kingdom (flowers) with the high frequency power of ascended and angelic beings.

Many Holidays, Many Names:

The word Ostara is just one of the names applied to the celebration of the spring equinox on March 21. The Venerable Bede said the origin of the word is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring. Of course, it's also the same time as the Christian Easter celebration, and in the Jewish faith, Passover takes place as well. For early Pagans in the Germanic countries, this was a time to celebrate planting and the new crop season. Typically, the Celtic peoples did not celebrate Ostara as a holiday, although they were in tune with the changing of the seasons.



A New Day Begins:

A dynasty of Persian kings known as the Achaemenians celebrated the spring equinox with the festival of Noruz -- which means "new day." It is a celebration of hope and renewal still observed today in many Persian countries, and has its roots in Zoroastrianism. In Iran, a festival called Chahar-Shanbeh Suri takes place right before Noruz begins, and people purify their homes and leap over fires to welcome the 13-day celebration of Noruz.



Mad as a March Hare:

Spring equinox is a time for fertility and sowing seeds, and so nature's fertility goes a little crazy. In medieval societies in Europe, the March hare was viewed as a major fertility symbol -- this is a species of rabbit that is nocturnal most of the year, but in March when mating season begins, there are bunnies everywhere all day long. The female of the species is superfecund and can conceive a second litter while still pregnant with a first. As if that wasn't enough, the males tend to get frustrated when rebuffed by their mates, and bounce around erratically when discouraged.

The Legends of Mithras:

The story of the Roman god, Mithras, is similar to the tale of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. Born at the winter solstice and resurrected in the spring, Mithras helped his followers ascend to the realm of light after death. In one legend, Mithras, who was popular amongst members of the Roman military, was ordered by the Sun to sacrifice a white bull. He reluctantly obeyed, but at the moment when his knife entered the creature's body, a miracle took place. The bull turned into the moon, and Mithras' cloak became the night sky. Where the bull's blood fell flowers grew, and stalks of grain sprouted from its tail.



Spring Celebrations Around the World:

In ancient Rome, the followers of Cybele believed that their goddess had a consort who was born via a virgin birth. His name was Attis, and he died and was resurrected each year during the time of the vernal equinox on the Julian Calendar (between March 22 and March 25). Around the same time, the Germanic tribes honored a lunar goddess known as Ostara, who mated with a fertility god around this time of year, and then gave birth nine months later – at Yule.



The indigenous Mayan people in Central American have celebrated a spring equinox festival for ten centuries. As the sun sets on the day of the equinox on the great ceremonial pyramid, El Castillo, Mexico, its "western face...is bathed in the late afternoon sunlight. The lengthening shadows appear to run from the top of the pyramid's northern staircase to the bottom, giving the illusion of a diamond-backed snake in descent." This has been called "The Return of the Sun Serpent" since ancient times.



According to the venerable Bede, Eostre was the Saxon version of the Germanic goddess Ostara. Her feast day was held on the full moon following the vernal equinox -- almost the identical calculation as for the Christian Easter in the west. One delightful legend associated with Eostre was that she found an injured bird on the ground one winter. To save its life, she transformed it into a hare. But "the transformation was not a complete one. The bird took the appearance of a hare but retained the ability to lay eggs. ..the hare would decorate these eggs and leave them as gifts to Eostre."



Modern Celebrations

This is a good time of year to start your seedlings. If you grow an herb garden, start getting the soil ready for late spring plantings. Celebrate the balance of light and dark as the sun begins to tip the scales, and the return of new growth is near.



Many modern Wiccans and Pagans celebrate Ostara as a time of renewal and rebirth. Take some time to celebrate the new life that surrounds you in nature -- walk in park, lay in the grass, hike through a forest. As you do so, observe all the new things beginning around you -- plants, flowers, insects, birds. Meditate upon the ever-moving Wheel of the Year, and celebrate the change of seasons.

The First Parade

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousands of years.



On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink, and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.



The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.



Over the next thirty-five years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called "Irish Aid" societies, like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes (which actually first became popular in the Scottish and British armies) and drums.



No Irish Need Apply

Up until the mid-nineteenth century, most Irish immigrants in America were members of the Protestant middle class. When the Great Potato Famine hit Ireland in 1845, close to a million poor, uneducated, Catholic Irish began to pour into America to escape starvation. Despised for their religious beliefs and funny accents by the American Protestant majority, the immigrants had trouble finding even menial jobs. When Irish Americans in the country's cities took to the streets on St. Patrick's Day to celebrate their heritage, newspapers portrayed them in cartoons as drunk, violent monkeys.



However, the Irish soon began to realize that their great numbers endowed them with a political power that had yet to be exploited. They started to organize, and their voting block, known as the "green machine," became an important swing vote for political hopefuls. Suddenly, annual St. Patrick's Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event for a slew of political candidates. In 1948, President Truman attended New York City 's St. Patrick's Day parade, a proud moment for the many Irish whose ancestors had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudice to find acceptance in America.



Wearing of the Green Goes Global

Today, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by people of all backgrounds in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated in other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore, and Russia.



In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick's Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use St. Patrick's Day as an opportunity to drive tourism and showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Last year, close to one million people took part in Ireland 's St. Patrick's Festival in Dublin, a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions, and fireworks shows.
